Every Player Who Was a Club Teammate of Both Messi and Ronaldo
FourPlayers is a game about exactly one question: who has shared a dressing room with whom? So here is
the ultimate version of it. Plenty of lists count international teammates, which is cheating - Deco,
Tevez and Dybala get in through Portugal and Argentina. Strip it to club football only,
the way our puzzles work, and the list collapses to a strange little club of about ten.
The Manchester United route
Gerard Piqué is the famous one: four years at United while a teenage Ronaldo was becoming Ronaldo, then home to Barcelona in 2008 to spend a decade winning everything alongside Messi. The strange one is Henrik Larsson. His two Barcelona seasons overlapped with Messi's first steps in the team, and his ten-week loan at Old Trafford in early 2007 - aged 35 - put him in the same XI as Ronaldo at his Premier League peak. Ten weeks. That's all it took to join the most exclusive club in football.
The Juventus-Barcelona swap deal
In the summer of 2020 Barcelona and Juventus traded midfielders: Arthur went to Turin, Miralem Pjanić came to Catalonia. Both had just spent two years with one GOAT and were about to spend the next with the other, in opposite directions. It remains the only transfer in history where both players involved completed the Messi-Ronaldo set on the same day. Martín Cáceres did it the slow way: Barcelona's dressing room in 2008-09, then a January 2019 move to Juventus during Ronaldo's first Serie A season.
The Real Madrid-PSG pipeline
When Messi landed in Paris in 2021 he walked into a dressing room full of Ronaldo's old Madrid teammates. Sergio Ramos - nine years of Clásicos against Messi, then two seasons passing to him. Keylor Navas, who kept goal behind Ronaldo through three straight Champions League wins. Ángel Di María, who assisted Ronaldo at Madrid and Messi everywhere. And Achraf Hakimi, who came through Madrid's academy into Ronaldo's squad and became one of Messi's closest friends in Paris. Pablo Sarabia squeaks in on a technicality - one first-team appearance in Ronaldo's Madrid before his PSG years with Messi - and purists are allowed to argue about him.
Why the list is closed
Messi in Miami and Ronaldo in Riyadh means the set is almost certainly complete. No current player can join it without one of the two greatest careers in history taking one more unexpected turn. Ten players, give or take a Sarabia - out of the hundreds of thousands who have played professional football during their era.
This is the whole idea of FourPlayers: careers cross in ways nobody remembers until the connection is pointed out. We hand you four players and ask for the one man who links them. It sounds easy. It is not.
